Female To Male (FTM) & Female To Nonbinary (FTN) Reconstruction Chest Surgery
Liposuction
Liposuction is a body contouring procedure that can be done to remove unwanted fatty tissue, and is commonly performed in combination with top surgery for the preaxilla (the area between where the breast tissue ends and the armpit), the lateral chest wall(lateral to where the breast tissue ends under the armpit)and sometimes in the middle of the chest over the sternum. This is very effective in helping to flatten these specific areas on the chest wall. When performed in conjunction with top surgery, liposuction can be performed through the top surgery incisions, without creating any new incisions or scars. When liposuction is performed for body contouring, small additional (5 mm) incisions are required which usually heal inconspicuously.
How Liposuction is Performed
Liposuction involves passing a cannula underneath the skin into the fatty tissue and suctioning out excess fat. A solution made of saline, lidocaine and epinephrine is injected prior to suctioning the fat in order to minimize pain and bleeding. Dr. Chandler uses a modified version of a specialized liposuction technique designed to minimize complications of liposuction including contour abnormalities. This is done using a cannula with special flared tip designed to smooth out the fatty tissue after suctioning is complete, in addition to suctioning in various directions to avoid spot area liposuction. The idea behind these methods is to prevent areas of contour convexity or concavity.
Downsides to Liposuction
The downside to liposuction is that it is usually not covered by insurance, and there will be increased soreness, swelling and bruising after surgery at the areas where liposuction was performed. There is a small risk of contour abnormalities which is minimized with the techniques described above.
